History
The M1A1 Thompson is an American submachine gun invented in 1918 by General John T. Thompson's Auto-Ordnance Company, and is chambered for the powerful .45 ACP cartridge. The weapon was designed during World War I with the intention of clearing enemy trenches with rapid fire in a compact, maneuverable package. The war ended before its design was finalized, but Thompson completed the weapon nonetheless and marketed it throughout the United States to civilians and government agencies alike. The Thompson became infamous in the Prohibition Era, used by both police and criminal organizations.
Several variations were adopted by the U.S. military in 1938 as a special issue for use by support staff, paratroopers, non-commissioned officers, and officers. Its high rate of fire made it an invaluable addition to squads operating in urban environments, as it was a powerful force multiplier and provided excellent suppression power. Toward the end of the war, plans were set to phase out the M1A1 and replace it with the M3 Grease Gun. However, due to delays and quality concerns with existing M3s, these plans were never set in motion.
Over 1.5 million Thompsons were produced by the end of the war, and it found use among many Allied forces, including American, British, ANZAC (Australia, New Zealand), and Canadian units throughout Western Europe.
Gameplay
With a Rate of Fire of 600 and only taking 6 Equipment Points. The Thompson excels clearing room to room, from building to building. Usually run with either a Pineapple MkII Hand Grenade or an Anti-Tank Grenade, and a First Aid Kit or Medic Pouch, it could be used to clear rooms that are full of enemies or hunting down APC and Tanks or being a U.S Medic to help those in need. But each SMGs has one weakness, it doesn't quite excel in Long Range Combat, so don't try it unless you want to be outgunned by your opponent. (Though I am sure that someone will do it.)
Pros
- Rate Of Fire: The Thompson M1A1 has a decent 600rpm, with it fully modded being able to reach 725rpm.
- Close Combat: Easy to clean an entire house or building compared to the Assault Rifles (M2 Carbine, STG 44, AVS-36) and Light Machine Guns.
- Single Fire: Unlike the MP40 and PPS-43, the Thompson can use single fire, helping you conserve ammo.
- Reload Speed: The Thompson reloads faster than the other top tier SMGs with just 2.9 seconds, and it reloads just as fast as the MP34.
Between
- Tank Crewmen: Being able to jump out of your tank in a hurry with the Thompson by your side allows you to eliminate anyone trying to place a ATE at your tank. But you can only carry 1 ammunition pouch, unless you fit in a Wrench which will force you to stay near a ammunition box.
Cons
- Magazine Size: Although it has 30 rounds, if you have 725rpm on your Thompson, you will run out of ammunition quickly. Best run to cover while reloading in case enemies are near by and smell free Exp.
- Ammunition: If you're using Thompson M1A1 to it's fullest potential, it's best if you grab Two Pouches of Ammunition (270) unless you think you're going to die quickly with battle it's probably best to stick to One Pouch of Ammunition (120).
- Ranged Combat: Although you can harass enemies at a distance, it might not be enough to keep their heads down while you get closer.
- Maintenance: Users who use Modification Build 1 will notice the repair costs, which although could be solved by Veteran Membership and conservation of ammunition, could lead to more debt then profit when using the M1A1 Thompson.
